Is resting in the afternoon on a daily basis really a good idea?

Recently I was watching Game 2 of the NBA Finals, and Jason Kidd, point guard of the Dallas Mavericks, stated that his key to success was "rest." At that point, I decided to follow that strategy, so I had been taking afternoon rests also. Then, I went to bed at 8:28 last night, then from about 2 AM to 7 AM, I had trouble falling asleep. As a result, I went from not being tired at 5 AM to being tired at 6 AM. Then, sometime around 7:15, I finally started dreaming, and I did not wake up until 10:50 AM this morning. So is resting in the afternoon really a good idea?
